A sourdough starter is the perfect lesson in trusting the unseen. You combine flour and water, and then you simply wait. You are trusting an invisible element to begin working beneath the surface. You cannot speed it up or force the process. You simply maintain the right conditions and trust that the unseen, powerful forces are doing their work.
This is the very essence of faith.
The starter reminds us that God’s greatest work often happens in the waiting and slow process of growth.
The starter requires consistent attention. If you forget to feed it, it won’t grow. If you put it in the back of the fridge and ignore it, it eventually dies.
Our faith is the same. It requires daily feeding—not just when we feel desperate, but every single day.
When worry creeps into your heart, ask yourself: Am I trusting the flour, or am I trusting the yeast?
Are you relying only on your own effort, skills, and resources (the flour), or are you relying on the invisible power that brings life from simple ingredients (the yeast)?
The homesteader knows that provision is a process. The Lord’s provision, in contrast, is continuous, consistent, and always sufficient. So rest in the knowledge that you are cared for. Tend your faith daily, trust the unseen work, and watch your bread—and your faith—rise.
