Welcome to the Midlife Maker: Reclaiming Our Roots in Northwest Ohio

Hi there! I’m Sarah, the Midlife Maker, and I am so glad you’re here.

If you’re anything like me, you’re feeling a pull to slow down, build something with your own hands, and live a life that’s more connected to what truly matters. That’s exactly what this space is about—my family’s journey toward a more intentional and self-sufficient life right here on a few acres in Northwest, Ohio.

Meet the Crew

We are a family rooted in strong Christian values, striving to bring back the lifestyle and wisdom of homesteading. Here’s a quick look at the crew behind the maker:

  • Jay: My wonderful husband and partner in all things DIY. He’s an avid outdoorsman and the muscle behind most of our bigger projects (like the incredible chicken coop we recently finished!).
  • Our Three Children: Our two oldest are spreading their wings, but our 17-year-old son is still anchoring the home front. We’re cherishing this season of building, growing, and learning new homesteading skills together before the nest is empty!
  • Millie: Our furry companion who mostly supervises.
  • The Chickens: Our newest family members! We are officially in our first year of chicken ownership and quickly learning the ropes!

Our Story: From 9-to-5 to Intentional Living

Like many of you, Jay and I both work full-time jobs outside of the home. We know what it’s like to balance a busy work schedule with a calling for something simpler. That’s why every day is an opportunity to make a small stride toward our goal: reclaiming the lifestyle and values of homesteading.

This blog is where I’ll be sharing our projects, our failures, and our wins—from building a new garden bed and sewing a creative project to sharing the frugal wisdom that allows us to invest in our self-sufficiency goals.

We are actively working on how to feed ourselves, fix things ourselves, and live better with less. Thank you for joining us as we turn this midlife journey into a maker’s journey!

What is the first “self-sufficiency” project you’ve always wanted to try? Tell me in the comments!
